March is Women's History Month
February 28, 2011

We are just about finished with the month of February and tomorrow will be March 1st. March is National Women's History Month - a time to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of women in history and in everyday life. When I was in school, nothing was taught about the contributions of women in history and women were barely mentioned in general. History was taught in the context of men. The only great women that I remember hearing about were Madame Curie, Helen Keller and Harriet Beecher Stowe. A bit more about women was mentioned in English classes, because who could ignore the wonderful poetry of Emily Dickinson (considered one of the top three American poets - the other two are Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman)? Still not very much.
Students today are very lucky because they are presented with the broad inclusion in their school work of not just women, but with the contributions of all people in our society. This is a much richer curriculum and one that all students can be grateful for.
I hope that you will stop by your library and check out a book on a famous woman and learn about what she gave to history. These stories are inspiring and remind us of the wonderful role models that have come before us. Hope to see you soon!

I have been a librarian with Pomona Unified School District since 1986. I have lived in Pomona all my life, having graduated from Ganesha High School. In fact, my husband graduated from Pomona High School.
I now have a dual assignment and work half time in the libraries at both Pomona High School and Diamond Ranch High School. This has been a real challenge for me, but lots of fun as well.
I am also president of the Pomona Public Library Board of Trustees. I would welcome any questions, comments or suggestions that you might have about our Pomona Public Library.
